The researchers of National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resources Bank of Guangxi Institute of Botany, Gesneriad Committee of China Wild Plant Conservation Association and Gesneriad Conservation

On March 22nd, National Gesneriaceae Germplasm Resources Bank of Guangxi Institute of Botany, Gesneriad Committee of China Wild Plant Conservation Association and the team of Gesneriad Conservation Center of China published a scientific paper on new monotypic genus of Gesneriaceae in China, Actinostephanus F.Wen, Y.G.Wei & L.F.Fu, in an international Journal of Plant Taxonomy PhytoKeys entitled Actinostephanus (Gesneriaceae), a new genus and species from Guangdong, South China. The co-first authors of this paper are researcher Wen Fang, assistant researcher Xin Zibing, and researcher Wei Yigang and associate researcher Fu Longfei are the co-corresponding authors, who are all belong to the supporting academy of the three organizations above, Guangxi Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The research was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Guangxi Science and Technology Program, the Central Special Fund for guiding Local Science and Technology Development, the Biological Resources Programme of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangxi Natural Science Foundation, projects of Guangxi Key Laboratory of Plant Conservation and Restoration Ecology in Karst& Terrain and others. At the same time, it has received strong support from Guangdong Enping Qixingkeng Provincial Nature Reserve, Anhui University and Kunming Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is the third new genus published by Prof. Wei Yigang’s team since the publication of Litostigma Y.G.Wei, F.Wen &M.Möller in 2010 and Michaelmoelleria F.Wen, Y.G.Wei & T.V.Do in 2020,which is of great academic value and scientific research significance.

In this study, chloroplast genome data were assembled by shallow genome sequencing for phylogenetic analysis. The results showed that the new genus belongs to fam. Gesneriaceae, subfam. Didymocarpoideae, Trib. Trichosporeae Subtrib. Leptoboeinae, and is closely relative to Rhynchotechum Blume、Boeica C.B.Clarke and Leptoboea Benth. But morphologically, the four groups can be well distinguished by the unique bowl-shaped and actinomorphic corolla, short oval and hard and densely covered pubescence capsules, persistent calyxes, and style of the new genus. At present, one known species of this new genus was confirmed, as Actinostephanus enpingensis F.Wen, Y.G.Wei & Z.B.Xin, which is distributed under the forest of Qixingkeng Provincial Nature Reserve in Enping, Guangdong Province. After many times of field investigation, it is found that the number of populations distributed in the reserve is large and the growth condition is well. According to the evaluation standard of IUCN, its endangered grade is currently rated as Least Concern, LC.

The history of Chinese botanists' research on Gesneriaceae can be traced back to 1935. Professor Woon Young Chun, the first director of our institute, was the founder of this researching field. Due to many reasons, our institute once lacked the study of this family. Later after the joint efforts of many teams in our institute for more than 20 years, we once again established our leading position in the field of plant taxonomy and conservation researches in Gesneriaceae. At present, The Guangxi Institute of Botany, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous region & Chinese Academy of Sciences, integrates “Gesneriad Committee of China Wild Plant Conservation Association (as the main institution)”, the National Germplasm Resources Bank of Gesneriaceae of GXIB (the first and only one in China now) and Gesneriad Conservation Center of China (including Guizhou, Shenzhen, East China, Shanghai branched centers) and other authoritative institutions in the field of Gesneriaceae, has become an important base for the research, protection and conservation of Gesneriaceae in China, guiding relevant institutions throughout the country to carry out relevant work, and leading the protection, scientific research, science popularization and industrial development of Gesneriaceae in China.
